ULTIMO
HOUSING
2 blocks of residential units for the City West Housing Company as part of the
Affordable Housing program. The units incorporate a number of design
innovations. Unlike many public housing designs the innovation was directed to
making the units more liveable and enjoyable to be in rather than an
architectural statement. This included balconies that could be screened off for
privacy and to become sunrooms, kitchens serving to balconies rather than being
buried in the plan, all bathrooms naturally ventilated, solar hot water,
extensive shared roof terraces with lift access and entertaining facilities.
The palette of materials was robust and longwearing requiring minimal
maintenance.
The project was designed by Roderick Simpson with documentation and contract
administration by Tonkin Zulhaika. It received an RAIA Merit Award in 1996, and
the RAIA environment award in 2001..
